what i had for lunch
Friday, March 18, 2005
I had to rewrite a story with my friend Paulo so he brought lunch to my place today. We had basamati rice with black beans and sauteed collard greens. The greens were the best part - done Brazilian style in olive oil with garlic. They kept some texture and were part crunchy. Screw vinegar - it's olive oil from now on. We had Girl Scout cookies for dessert.

I went to try out this new mediterrainean restaurant today. I really wanted stuffed grape leaves. It turned out to be a little buffet, the kind that goes by wieght like in the city. I doubt that will last long around here but the food was great. They didn't have stuffed grape leaves but I asked about them and they got me some all special. I should've gotten two pieces of baklava.

I went with an old client who ended up being my friend to Doc Chey's. We had veggie spring rolls and I had pad thai. It was delish . But this dude from her work and a big fat client sat showed up there and sat at the next table. There wasn't much room for the fat guy and he kept getting up and putting his butt right in my face.

i was just at the covered market in pest, where i bought some absinthe among other novelty gifts. but i ate lunch there, too, and had this hungarian dish of sausage, potatoes, peppers, and some other shit that tasted real good. i got a beer and baklava as well. the baklava was just ok. it cost 1150 forint, but all i had were two 1000 ft. bills, and the lady didn't have enough change so she spared me the 150 forint, which is just under one u.s. dollar. i don't think she liked doing that, but it's her fault for not having sufficient change in a busy-ass marketplace. TA-DOW, HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW?!

I went to lunch with my old office ladies and got a supreme amount of gossip. we ate at the twisted fork. I got the steak salad. Overpriced.
today dragan and i went to eat lunch at this family's house out in the stix of croatia. they're pretty poor, like a lot of people, but they still spared no expense and pulled out all the big guns: orange fanta, bbq pork, homemade sausage, fresh killed chicken, fresh bread, and leetle tiny peekles and hot peppers. i had turkish coffee afterwards with a little sugar. by interpreting through dragan, they said next time i came over, they'd make rabbit.

MP called to see if I wanted to get lunch. We went to my house since I happen to have a lot of food. He explained all about the Palastines to me while we had half a chicken salad sandwich, half a turkey/jalepeno montery jack/ spinach sandwich, tabuoleh, the rest of the bleu cheese cole slaw, fritos, and cookies. I made powder lipton tea since I love it, and he only scoffed a little.

I had an AAAC related lunch meeting at Doc Chey's. I had the fakey white people pad thai. Which was delish. I think Doc Chey's is a really tex mex sounding name for a noodle house.

virginia and I ate at the Raleigh Neomonde, but were constantly confused about whether things were the same or different from the Cary location. I had the sampler platter with potato salad, stuffed grape leaves, cabbage salad, and chickpea salad. Thanks to the beautiful weather (65 and sunny with blue skies), we got to eat outside. Everyone there was drinking diet sodas.
I passed a Pupuseria on my way back at the corner of western, hillsborough, and jones franklin. I love Pupusas and am looking forward to going there for lunch ASAP.

while i was in san angelo, texas, i saw this place called whataburger. i thought to myself that it'd be hilarious if i had a burger from there one day and after the first bite or two look up and exclaim, "what a burger!". so i convinced my colleague to have lunch there on saturday. the employees didn't seem very happy to be working at whataburger, but my order went through and i finally sank my teeth into the loaded burger after much anticipation. i raised my eyes slowly to chris and said "what a burger!". it was somewhat anticlimactic. i got the double-decker badboy, and it was very salty and greasy, but still edible. i will not go back to whataburger.

For a lunch meeting I ordered the tailgate special # 1 from the Q Shack through Raleigh Take Out. The meat (ribs, brisket and bbq) and hush puppies got high marks, but the sides (slaw, tater salad, and baked beans) left something to be desired. I'd do everything exactly the same again though. there wasn't a whole lot of complaints from the staff. It was 15 minutes late. Next time I'd order a large side of Mac & Cheese for Megan, because I think all the potato salad had meat in it.

got me a little tokyo joe's action cuz i'm trying to eat healthy these days. no mt. dew, either. straight up high-quality h2o. the regular chicken bowl with brown rice, veggies, and spicy-aki sause seems like a relatively healthy thing to eat, and it's not expensive to boot. so go grab yourselves some tokyo joe's; you'll be glad you did. i know i am. glad, that is. i was trying to sound like i was a famous person giving a testamonial on the a.m. radio.

since my office moved i was hoping i would have all kinds of cool new places to eat luch, so far that hasn't really happened as I am a despicable creature of habit. However today i went to a new place with my Dad. It's called the Ghengis Grill. It's was a pretty good mongolian bbq. A little on the pricey side for one bowl and it made my tummy rumble a bit afterward but overall it was really good.

i just went to einstein bagel bros for the last freaking time. those a-holes gave me chips instead of the potato salad like i asked for (i did the drive thru so i didn't realise in time), and last time i was there i waited in line forever only to have them mess up my order completely, and then when i told them i didn't order what they gave me, the chick gave me guff and was quite rude. they're always rude at einstein bagel bros and the sandwiches are sub-par in my opinion.

Today I ate at a place called "the market" in Larimer square. It's kinda like a grocery store/restaurant, it's very european in that way (see picture below). I had the jubalaya pie and although it was good my stomach has been rumbling ever since. nothing has happened yet but i'm afraid that when it does, it's gonna be bad.
Tuesday, December 21, 2004
i went with casey my lead guitarist to the elephant bar. it was a good lunch because i was pretty much done with work so i had a couple pints of pale ale and casey had a couple pints of bass. beers at lunch mid-week is always a good thing in my humble opinion. elephant bar has a kind of south-pacific menu. lotta fish and salads and seafood but they also have other stuff. i had the fried shrimp po' boy and they pretty much doused the thing with tartar, which was not the bomb. i wanted a shrimp po' boy, not a tartar sandwich. the fries were mediocre and too soggy.

i ate at fatburger for the first time today, even though it's a las vegas classic. i think they call it "fatburger" cuz one of the first things they ask you is: would you like chili, bacon, cheese, or egg on your fatburger today? my reply to that query was a resounding "no" but don't think i didn't play with the idea of eating such a scrumptious burger just to experience a party in my mouth with everyone invited. the burger was good and the onion rings melted in my mouth. all in all a good lunch.
Today was our company xmas lunch. I signed up to bring the mac and cheese. I didn’t b/c yesterday was too shitty and I didn’t get to the store. ( my hangover was also a factor). So today when my boss came and picked me up I made him go to the ham place ( cos I had to get the ham anyway) and I got potatoes au gratin and stuffing. Everything else was in the casserole variety or pie. I managed to control myself and only have 3 deviled eggs.
Wednesday, December 15, 2004
we went to red robin today and i got the 5 alarm burger which includes pepperjack chz, jalepenos, salsa, and chipotle mayo. it's good and one thing i really like about the dirty bird industries is the bottomless steak fries, although i never get through my original basket. it's just the idea that's appealing to me.

today i went to Jimm John's and got a Big John Sub. The sandwhich was good (not scrumpy) but the bread was great. my office will be moving next week. this should open up a whole new world in lunch options for me.
today being a half-day at work, i went to lunch at il vicino's with the roomie and another friend. they both got the pesto panini chicken sandwich, which is what i normally get and includes chopped grilled chicken, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, onion, and a delectible pesto spread. this time though i had the capicola ham and turkey sandwich with a side caesar. il vicino's caesar salads are quite the bomb because the caesar dressing is made the real way with anchovies and they even throw on a little anchovie on top. i don't eat the anchovies though.
Thursday, December 09, 2004
I went to lunch with a client/friend today. They have that bread that you stick in the herbed olive oil. I only sort of like it but I always eat it as tho it's my last meal. Anyway I got linguine, chicken, mushrooms and artichokes in a lemon taragon cream sauce. It was major delish, but I ate too much and now I feel like a grease ball. God knows I need a cream sauce like a hole in my head.

i went with my monthly pr group to mcmenamins and had the best roast beef sandwich covered in sauted onions on the best bread EVER. if you're ever in the pacific northwest you'll have to try mcmenamins!

today i went to q'doba with a couple coworkers. q'doba's pretty much like chipotle, but i still say it tastes better. i used to get the vegetarian burrito, not because i'm a vegetarian (which i'm not) but because it's quite delish (not meaning to sound too much like chevy valentine et al). i don't get the vegetarian burrito anymore though, since i discovered the magical magnificently modest chicken quesadillas. these are quite possible the most bomb-ass quesadillas i've had anywhere. i think quesadilla-making is underrated. i also splurged and got a damn chocolate chip cookie. it's getting harder and harder for me to resist getting sweets.

By last night everyone was totally sick of turkey. My mom went to the store after church and got sausage to make sausage and peppers. I talked her into letting me make spaghetti out of it instead which was way more awesomer. ( I didn't mean to sound that much like LSE) Anyway I went to their house for lunch and ate that. Also I had some Alouette and crackers.

Virginni, Megan and I went to a Mexican restaraunt in Cary. Megan ate a veggie burrito & beans, Ginni had a combo # 11 that consisted of a chile relleno, a flauta and a quesadilla, I think. I had the lunch portioned order of carnitas. Noone wanted to go back to the office afterward. Its rainy and everyone's just looking to Thanksgiving.
Monday, November 22, 2004
i went to the printing company to have thanksgiving lunch. it was complete with everything youd imagine, turkey, ham, a million kinds of potatoes, etc etc. it was covered dish.
the most important element was that green marshmallow salad stuff that only appears at the holidays. i love that shit. i can eat it til im sick. the woman that made it said she wasnt going to make it but knew id have a stroke about it so she did anyway.
my brother and his baby mama and my mom showed up with the baby.

virginia invited me to lunch with her coworkers again today. She had a Lucy's card, which gave us 20% off of our lunch at Cafe Carolina. However, using the Lucy's card proved harder than it would seem. But finally I got the Chicken Salad in a Bowl. The chicken salad there is real dilly, and good. I used to order it on a crossiant with cucumbers added, and that was terrific. The bowl isn't quite as good as that, but it does come with a cheese/veggie skewer, and of course, skewers make everything better. I also ordered a side of potato salad b/c last time I got the bowl o' lunch it was not very much and i was concerned about being hungry. But the food preparer this time scooped on the goodness so now I have enough for lunch tomorrow too.

so is nobody eating lunch anymore?
i had a slice of pepperoni pizza and a bread roll with pepperoni on the inside, from the lockheed martin cafeteria. i love walking into that place all bundled up with my hoody and rain jacket and shit-kickers on, with 4 day's growth of beard and a beanie because everyone else is in their business-casual attire and looks all nice and so when they see a scrub walk through the doors it's almost like you hear the record scratch and stop, and everyone turns and looks at the rif-raf that just walked in.

went to panera bread with a coworker. i usually get the half sandwich/salad combo for $6.19 (before tax) because it's a pretty good deal. they give you this piece of bread that i like to pick out the middle part and eat it plain and then tear the crust into pieces and mop up excess caesar and crouton bits. i got the pepperblue steak on ciabatta bread and a side caesar. not one of the best side caesars around (for sure not the bomb), but not bad.
rocked the vote via washington state absentee ballot yesterday, and while i won't say who i voted for, i will say that under the current administration lunch prices have been too high.

I had leftovers from dinner last night -- we made pizza using the new gluten free bakery raw pizza dough. it was delish. way better than the frozen ones i've been eating. its about 10 inches instead of 4. It tasted like real pizza. It had pepperoni and tomatoes and basil and onions and green peppers.
Thursday, October 28, 2004
yesterday and today i had really bad lunches from the lockheed martin cafeteria. yesterday it was gross "mediterranean" "beef" "pita". there was nothing "mediterranean about the so-called beef and the pita was dry. topped that off with a bag of sun chips and a kit-kat bar.
then today i just got the pizza cuz i've had it before and it's decent, so i grab a couple slices that i didn't really want and that had been sitting under the heating lamp for a while and as soon as i go to pay, the cook lady walks out with a brand-frigging-new tray of piping hot pizza and i thought to myself 'damn my impatience!'.

I've been eating a lot of someting lately that's really good. A perfect combination of sour/sweet for dairy lovers. It's Nancy's non-fat vanilla yogurt with Vanilla Almond granola on top. The yogurt is really sour, even with the vanilla in it and the granola is really sweet. There's also some really good texture to the whole thing. And that's part of what I had for lunch.

we ate at neomonde again today.
I had the sampler platter with chicken salad, potato salad, cabbage salad, and dolmades. And some olives. a lot of olives.
Megan had the sampler platter too with lasagna, cabbage salad, potato salad, and something else with some pita.
they were selling giant dates with the rest of their desserts. the only thing i could think of that is worse than a giant date for dessert is a raisin.

ate at samurai sushi near arapahoe and i-25. we got a bunch of stuff like miso soup, edamame, green tea, salmon, yellowtail, mackerel, sea urchin, shrimp, spicy tuna roll, and some more stuff that i wasn't able to eat. casey and i saw a guy sitting at a booth across from us drinking an asahi beer and we knew right then we must get beer. pretty much it was like there was a party in my mouth, and everyone was invited.
samurai sushi was decent, and had average happy hour prices for sushi. but i still haven't found a place that beats out the banzai restaurant near leetsdale and monaco.

Since I actually ate something other than a peanut butter sandwich today, I thought I would share.
I went to Moe Jo's and had a veggie burger with swiss cheese, sauteed mushrooms and onions, lettuce, tomato and pickles. This was accompanied with the perfect side of fries, golden & crunchy outside and mushy in the middle. I highly recommend there if you are ever in Raleigh

went to earl's today with casey my friend and lead guitar player in the nancy drews. earl's rhymes with girls. it's like they decided to only hire their waitstaff and hostesses from strip clubs. i had the garlic chicken club sandwich and a side caesar. earl's is really expensive and the only reason i go there is cuz casey is a stock broker and he buys. i bring the beers at band practice.

On Monday when I was at my parents my mom yelled at me for trying to get into these almond cookies she had. Apparantly they were for some church thing.
So I went up today for lunch... nobody was there....had leftover stew and egg noodles. Totally delish. And right when I was finishing up my mom walks in with the leftover almond cookies from the church thing! So I finally go to eat them. This was insanely radical.

i went to vegas last weekend and had lunch at my favorite spot to have lunch in all of vegas -- paymon's medditerranean cafe / hookah lounge. i've been going there for almost five years now and the quality of food has never diminished, although the service is not always the bomb.
the food is gourmet (without the gourmet price tag) and i always get the same thing but i've sampled other people's stuff so i know that it's not just what i'm getting that's good. so yet again i got the roasted red pepper and feta in pita, which also has cucumber, red onion, lettuce, and tzaziki sauce (i think). you gotta order the fries seperately, but whatever you do, don't forget the fries cuz they're totally awesomely spiced and they come with this mayonnaise-based dipping sauce that is also spicey and insanely radical to the taste bud.
oh yeah for an appetizer we had the hummus and pita and my only complaint would be more kalamata olives.
so after a spectacular dinner you can head right across the small courtyard to the hookah lounge for happy hour (half off hookahs, beers, and cocktails) from 5 to 7. this is so worth it, it would blow your freaking mind. sorry this post is so long, but if you ever find yourself in vega$, be sure and hit up medditerranean cafe and hookah lounge because they will rock your world for reals.

i went up the mountain to have lunch, but my mom's been out of town and there was no food at all. i went over to MP's to see what he had.. He made a salad with bleu cheese and balsamic vinagrette and leftover grilled lamb. He also had this amazing carrot soup that he makes. Its basically one part carrot 10 parts bleu cheese and 20 parts cream. Its fantastic but i couldnt eat all mine.
I made some chili yesterday to make the house not chilly. It was really good, but I packed a portion that was too big for lunch but too small to save any for leftovers so I just stuffed my face with it. Now I'm all groany.
Megan had squash and peas and ... something else I forget. Another vegetable.

last year's state fair adventure can be found here, on october 16, 2003.
I am so jealous of the fair food. But I had buckwheat (Kasha) pilaf, and Megan had soy cheese and macaroni.
Speaking of coworkers having dumb responses to lunches, What do you respond to:
"You guys always have such healthy lunches. Makes me feel guilty."
Especially since its not true.

went to del barfo, got the usual.
yesterday we tried to go to the new fatburger that opened up near the park meadows mall in b.f.e., but the line was so long that we just went next door to tokyo joe's.
i've got to start making my lunches at least 3 times a week again, but i'm so burnt out on pbj's/pb honeys, apples, bananas, granola bars (my standard "make at home lunch"). any idears on how to mix up/spice up/diversify "make at home" lunches?

yesterday we fired up the grill and I totally burnt the crap out of some porkchops. Mine was inedible, Noah and Henry could eat most of theirs. To get some use out of the charcoals, we stuck a chicken on the grill and roasted it. It came out pretty delicious. I stuck it in the table top convection (aka the nacho machine) for 30 minutes at the end when teh coals had died down.
I made chicken salad with the breasts last night and had chicken salad tacos for lunch today. It was pretty good, but could have used some more flavor. I also had a Lance Peanut Bar for dessert, which is pretty much pure sugar.
Megan had some pasta (maybe rigatoni?) in a marinara sauce with some fake ground meat. It wasn't a very big portion. She also had a carmel apple someone brought in to the office last week.

usually on the fridays i work i go with a few people to wahoos! fish tacos and we take like a 2 hour lunch which is the bomb. but the normal crew isn't here today so i went by myself to jason's deli and got the club royale sandwich. it's loaded up with turkey and ham, some lettuce, tomato, and cheddar chz, and has this killer honey mustard spread, all in between a greasy delicious croissant. it comes with the standard fare of potato chips and a pickle, but i added a piece of cherry cheesecake, and indeed, it was scrumtrulescent.
yesterday me and MP were going to this mexican place and on the way were just to Savoy when i hollared that we should go to savoy instead. He was all: i was hoping youd say that!
I got Penne alla vodka which was totally fantastic. Usually pasta with pancetta in it is good, but its usually like having these little fat balls to deal with. This pancetta was crisp and perfect.

Some info on members --
I think that out of regular posters we have mostly people from NC (from various parts of the state), and Hubs and now LSE, in Denver.
Irregular posters include people in OR, CA, DC, and more people in NC. But our membership has never meant to be exclusive, or limited. We have been regularly known to link to restaurant web sites, especially if we have been unhappy with the experience. We were the top hit for "Moe's Southwest Grill Sucks" for a long time, which I was proud of, especially since I really hate the place.
Spelling is often bad by all members. Because of this, we regularly get hits by people looking for our misspelled versions of recipes. I recently added a site meter to the bottom.
It is often incredibly boring. This fact is not lost on the authors, in fact, this is often reveled in.
The original authors chose to not link back to individual blogs from the homepage, for reasons I don't remember. We could change it, but I don't really see any reason too.
I'm glad that this is over a year old. I still think that its hilarious at times, and hope we continue. Welcome to new members. And I promise that just because we are sometimes mean to Hubs, it doesn't meanwe are really that mean.

this is a late post, it's actually saturday but still friday in my mind cuz i just got home.
"today" i ate at max burgerworks and had a freakin phenomenal burger. southwest burger which includes pepperjack cheese, chipotle mayo, and onion rings. thing was stacked like a foot high and was very delicious. fries and onion rings on the side, and a fat tire to wash it all down with. a little pricey, but well worth it.

I went with MP to this newish tex-mex place, Mamacitas. I like this place but they really nickel and dime you to death on the extras. I had two soft tacos, one with citrus chicken and one with chipotle chicken. The citrus was better. And I'm not just saying that cos Im so sick of people saying chipotle.

theres this little hole-in-the-wall luncheonette right down from where i work. its been there forever and its stupid cheap and its kind of sick and kind of delicious. thursday is beef tips day. my co worker is always making this big deal about them but most thursdays we're too late and they sell out.
finally i got beef tips today. they came over rice with gravy and i got pickled beets and a salad that was swimming in ranch ( in the good way)... also two biscuits. one was great and one was shitty.

I went to lunch with Ginni and her office again. I almost feel as if I work at her office since I talk to her coworkers more than mine. We went to neomonde. I got the samplet platter with chickpea salad, potato salad, pasta salad, and stuffed grape leaves. I ate a nutrageous back at the office b/c i was jealous of everyones baklava.

On Saturday Sally, Se, and Noah came into Asheville for a wedding. We went to the Greek Festival downtown. ( Also with us were MP and Ellen)... SE tried to get souvalki and ended up with this gyro and was super pissed about it. I think Noah ate the wrapper.
I had spanokopita and meatballs and Noah and me had struck up a Dolmades deal, so my lunch turned out fantastic.
Later I had baklava for the first time since i was a kid. I think its only ok.

megan and i were supposed to meet ted and ginni for lunch, but then ted bailed on us for some monkeys. somehow Hooters became the restaraunt of choice. When Ginni's coworkers realized where she was going they all tagged along. We had to wait a LOOONNNG time. It felt kind of ridiculous to wait 30 minutes for hooters. Apparently our waitress was really dumb, or really new. I couldn't hear that well, and just quit trying. Everyone kind of got mesmerized by the atmosphere, and everyone watched their own personal flat screen tv showing sportscenter and poker.
It took forever, and we ended up taking a two hour lunch. then our boss showed up, and was eating by himself so megan sent him over an Icehouse.
I had the flappertizer, a side salad, and baked beans. and ginni's coworker's leftover cold fry ends.
I feel totally barfy.

i met with a new contact for one of my accounts. it was a pretty good time. she smokes alot. i had chili and a house salad. this place has great ranch... and the chili came with those really good super thin corn chips.
just now i had to go to cookies by design for one of those millionaire cookies. most depressingly they were out. but they have good pnut butter cookies. they have reeses cup peices in them.

I was banking on leftovers for lunch today, but noah ate more than I was expecting. Instead I went to the buffet at India Palace II located in a weird shopping center in a gas station parking lot. It was fabulous. I decided that eating by yourself at a buffet is perfect, b/c even if you are with someone, inevitable your timing for refills gets off, and you're never sitting at the table at the same time anyway.

I just got back from eating a Bridge Hampton sandwhich from Gandolfo's. It wasn't enough so I had to eat two.

i had a meditteranean bagel sandwich from my favorite muffin. it gave me onion breath because red onions are included. and while delicious, red onions give you bad breath.
included in the value meal is your choice of muffin. i chose the cherry cheesecake muffin and saved it for last because it's that good.
