today is one of those few days that subway got it right: fresh bread, crisp and plentiful veggies, just the right amount of spicy mustard, you get the picture.
i got the usual: 6" italian b.m.t. on parmesan oregano bread, with provolone cheese, all veggies except pickles and banana peppers, one line of spicy mustard. sun chips and diet coke.
one of my new york city lunches was actually a 4 pm brunch because we slept in until 2 or something. the place was fucking awesome for brunch: they give you a choice of like 15 brunch menu items, plus four alcoholic beverages - choice of mimosa, straight champagne, bloody mary, or margarita. all this for $14.95! needless to say we got a little buzzed and then proceeded to stop at a bar on the way home for happy-hour peebers. this was on sunday i think.

Today I covered the Gift & Home show, which was much cooler than it sounds, and they had free media lunch kits. I had a tuna salad sandwich made with red peppers and some type of spicy mayo and capers. It came with greasy, green pasta that I ate anyway and a wonderful peanut butter cookie. I love free lunches.

I don't have very long for lunch so I called in an order for the Fiesta Grille and raced down the road to pick it up. I thought I ordered three tacos, and was surprised when it wasn't ready when I got there. So they ring me up and I realized the woman on the phone and I didn't understand each other and I ended up with 20$ of tacos and carnitas and beefy cheese dip. I didn't tell them the mistake, and stuffed my face all the way back to the office.
I went to fig with my dad. Ran into Heather there.
I had this carrot lemongrass soup and a salad with walnuts and goat cheese vineagrette and deviled eggs.
I was talking with my dad about how happy I am that 50’s food is so in vogue. ( had tomato aspic yesterday for the first time. Gag.) He said that in the 50’s when you went to a really nice restaurant you got a half of grapefruit and maybe some tomato juice. Sounds shitty, but I guess that’s why they were so much healthier than we are now.

I started a new job so my lunches have been a little wonky as i get in the swing of things. Yesterday I had guacomole and chips and a banana, for example. Today I had spaghetti that I froze from about a month ago, the cafeteria spaghetti. The weird thing is that because of my new schedule, I now eat lunch at 3:00 EST. It really messes your mind up.

today i went to Bene! Gourmet Pizza. i'm eating it right now and it's quite the bomb. i got the lunch deal which includes a slice, caesar salad (or house but i always get caesar), and popsky.
my slice is the mediterranean pizza which is vegetarian and includes: tomato-basil (or sundried tomato sauce, i can't remember) sauce, mozerella, spinach strips, feta, olives, diced tomatoes, red onions, capers, and artichoke hearts. the caesar salad comes with a slice of red bell pepper and a lemon, and has just the right proportion of parmesan, croutons, dressing, and lettuce. and all for under $9.

just got back from lunch at new york deli news. casey raved about the corned beef & pastrami on rye, but i got the rare roast beef & swiss with tomato and lettuce on rye. it was a triple decker, the roast beef was delicious, and you automatically get a dish of pickle spears when you sit down, which i thought was the bomb. they have great mustard too, and you'd probably get cement slippers if you asked for mayo on the sandwich.
Last night Alison and I went out ti dinner to Cafe Parvaneh in Chapel Hill. Its one of those places you pass lots but never actually stop to eat there. It was delicious, and I had leftovers of my Curry Polo. On their web site they link directly to the Orange Co. Health Dept. web site, since they are very proud of their sanitation grade. I got totally grossed out over Vespa's rating of a mid-range B.

i was going to bring a pb&j today but i woke up too late to make one, and yes i know that it takes like 2 minutes or less to make a pb&j but those 2 minutes or less are precious.
so i got quizno's and everytime i eat there i always wonder why. had the honey bacon club on wheat, sun chips, diet mt. dew. the diet mt. dew didn't do shit for a caffeine rush.

i'm eating a baja burrito from baja fresh right now. inside the tortilla: queso de jack, guacamole, pico de gallo, pollo. when i was putting some fresh medium salsa in the to-go ramekin i accidentally spilled it. i didn't clean it up because there was a huge line mounting behind me and nobody seemed to care. they just wanted their damn salsa.
Tuesday, June 28, 2005
had tokyo joe's, the regular chicken bowl with brown rice, veggies, spicy-aki sauce. they totally skimped on the vegetables and i think automatically gave me the white chicken bowl, even though it is more expensive and i didn't ask for it. not that i have anything against white-meat chicken, i just don't like to pay extra.

Megan went to get her eyes checked and picked us up some lunch on the way back. I got a grilled chicken salad that had a fruit salad thrown into it -- strawberries, blueberries, pineapples, oranges. With poppyseed dressing. It was weird, but good.
Megan had this asian apple salad, but there were no apples in it. Supposedly her dressing tasted like her own vomit, so she used some from the fridge instead.

I bought a pre packed greek salad from Ingles yesterday. It was delish. The dressing was like pizza place dressing, the kind thats like a bottle of dried oregano in oil. The packaging was the most incredible. The feta ( the kind with sundrieds and kalamata olives), tomatoes, and olives had little perfect compartments. It was great. And only something like 2 bucks.
Also i finished the other half of an Amy's Pizza.
Also i finished the other half of an Amy's Pizza.
friday casey and i went to the hornet. the bartender and servers were all women and were all hottie bo-botties. i had the steak sandwich which did not have nearly enough steak on it. comes with red and yellow bell peppers and like this spicy chipotle mayo or something. the bartender told us to come back, she works every friday at the same time. so casey and i are going to go back and see if she really wanted us to come back and one of us get her number, or if she just wants tips.
i've really been into steak sandwiches lately. and steak salads, although not very many places have steak salads, and that's a shame.

i had subway yet again, but it's becoming less and less worth it these days because colorado subways quit giving out stamps for free subs. same thing as always: 6" italian bmt on parmesan oregano, all veggies except pickles and banana peppers (or pepperoncinis, whatever you like to call them), a little spicy mustard, regular sun chips, diet coke.

I have been working on a story in the Mexican neighborhood, Pilsen, which has the most incredible food. The first time we had family style tacos served on corn tortillas. We watched them cook the meat and then they made a special plate for the gringos to taste which had pork, cow and goat. Today I had 3 bean tostadas that were perfect. It's a nice change from peanut butter and jelly. The salsa was the hottest I've ever had.

Megan took me to the Farmer's Market Restaraunt for lunch, and I had i giant half of chicken, hot & spicy bbq style, with squash & onions, and fresh strawberries. Megan had squash & onions, hushpuppies, a biscuit, a fried green tomato, strawberries, cucumber salad, and banana puddin. After we bought some produce. I wanted to get a bouquet of peonies, but they were 1.50/stem!

I went to Wild Wing with MP. I had the buffalo chicken salad. Its fantastic. They have this incredible bleu cheese dressing that I just want to bathe in. Its basically salad with cheese and bacon and tomatoes and cucumber and grilled chicken in buffalo sauce( the vinegar based kind, not the thick kind.) Last time they put almonds on it on accident so I asked them to again. So delish. Mp got a quesadilla.

so, what happened, was there some kind of depression style lunch shortage while I was out of the country?
We had a real deamy bbq work lunch today, except the dream was shattered slightly when I realized that they didn't bring the ribs (one crack in the mirror for me) and the mac & cheese (one crack in the mirror for Megan). I still had brisket and regular bbq salad and i snuck in some hush puppies and fried okra and am a total greaser but still. sigh. ribs.

i'm going to try something a little different today and do a future lunch post. in approximately 13 minutes i'm going to take a company truck and drive to chipotle to meet my friend casey for shitty "mexican" "food". i will get the chicken fajita burrito and it will be satisfying at first, and by satisfying in mean filling because those bastard burritos are huge, but i will regret this decision to eat at chipotle later on today. i will also be tempted to get a chocolate chip cookie and will probably give in to the temptation because i've been doing that a lot lately.
i will take the company truck and tell the dude that drove us to the office, the bi-polar guy i work with out in the field, that i have to take the truck to meet my stock broker, which is not a complete fabrication because casey is indeed a stock broker, but he's also the lead guitarist in the nancy drews and we won't talk about stocks and bonds at all. oh no, we'll just talk band stuff.
beware of chipotle, it is an anal-annhilator, a colon-crusher, a rectal-wrecker.

I'm sneaking in a breakfast post today. I've been dying to go the the Western Steak House in Burlington, but we always thought it would be too expensive, or we were too dirty, etc. Its always packed too. I should not have worried. The inside is divided up into these weird rooms, probably 4 of them, maybe more, I couldnt see. Most of them are smoking, one small one is non-smoking. Its full of old people. I start to look at the menu, and for a second think i was given the wrong menu, an old outdated one. The M-F breakfast special is: 2 eggs, a sausage pattie (their spelling, not mine), biscuit or toast, potatoes or grits. $1.60. $1.60! I got that with potatoes and biscuits for Noah, and Noah got bacon, 2 eggs, grits, a side of gravy, toast, a side of tomatoes and we got two coffees. $7.25. We decided Burlingotn was a developing country compared to metropolitan NC.
for lunch I had a blt salad and megan had a garden salad and french fries. I stole a pickle from our boxes box, he went home sick earlier this morning and didn't eat his lunch.

I made these sesame noodles (except they were really rice noodles with sesame oil) last night (as well as the asian slaw) and brought leftover noodles to work today. I also had these weird Rice Crips as a dessert. They seemed like smooshed rice cakes drizzled with sugar. They tasted like breakfast cereal. Megan had a burrito.

Last night I wanted to cook something in my new stove so I cooked a chicken. I have been roasting it this way for the past couple of months, but I also wanted to use this new vertical chicken roaster I got. Its from Seagrove and is a real pretty green blue. Similar in shape to this one, but with a much different glaze. It has a center part for liquid to steam it from the inside out. I used the recipe but altered it a little bit, putting more of a rub on the skin. It was very delicious and cooked faster than in a regular roasting pan (or so it seemed. Maybe because I wasn't opening up the oven door to baste it constantly it cooked quicker.)
I had the leftovers today, I didn't bring enough in and probably be hungry later but it was very good.
Megan had a very large vegetarian sandwich.

Megan and I took off and went to Neomonde today. I waa real confused while trying to order and asked for grapes while I was trying to ask for olives. I had the sampler platter and it was pretty good, except i only had one potato in my potato salad. I also had cabbage salad chicken salad and stuffed grape leaves. Megan had fava bean salad and a grilled vegetable pita thing.
When we were walking up this mailman cruised by and part of his truck flew off.

The company is sponsoring this seminar and the sponsors got taken out to lunch today. I really like the restaurant, but they have these awesome rolls with herb butter, HERB BUTTER that are so hard to resist. Anyway I did and I had the cobb salad. Which was totally amazing. It even had hearts of palm on it. But I didn't get to finish it cos this guy was talking to me so I put my fork down to listen ( rare, I know) and the waiter came up and stuck his hand on my plate and started to take it. I was too dumbstruck to stop it. Esp. since who wants it after his gross hand is all over it.

a week ago today i went to opening day baseball to see the rockies v. padres. i ate lunch at the ballpark, a footlong bratwurst with kraut and onions & peppers. the morons working the stand, they never drain the kraut or the onions & peppers before they slop it on the dog, so by the time i poured on the ketchup and mustard, the bun was soggier than shit, and soggy bread makes me dry heave. so the whole dog fell apart and i took a few bites of just the bratwurst, but then i threw it away because it just wasn't worth it, even though i paid $6.50 for the bastard. however at the bottom of the 8th i got a footlong rockies dog and just put ketchup and mustard on it and it was delish. so remember, always tell those foolios to drain the shit before they slop it on, if you're a kraut and onions & peppers kind of person.

I had leftovers form last night's dinner. We had chicken thighs and scalloped potatoes and gorgonzola broccoli slaw with bacon crumbles. I had this friend who loved hooters wing sauce and finally she badgered the restaurant enough that they told her their secret sauce was just texas pete and butter. I don't know if that's true or not, but its really a delicious way to cook thighs. we browned em in the butter texas pete sauce, then transferred them to the grill, but it was taking too long, so switched them to the oven. The skin was especially delicious.

Friday, March 18, 2005
I had to rewrite a story with my friend Paulo so he brought lunch to my place today. We had basamati rice with black beans and sauteed collard greens. The greens were the best part - done Brazilian style in olive oil with garlic. They kept some texture and were part crunchy. Screw vinegar - it's olive oil from now on. We had Girl Scout cookies for dessert.

I went to try out this new mediterrainean restaurant today. I really wanted stuffed grape leaves. It turned out to be a little buffet, the kind that goes by wieght like in the city. I doubt that will last long around here but the food was great. They didn't have stuffed grape leaves but I asked about them and they got me some all special. I should've gotten two pieces of baklava.
Wednesday, March 09, 2005
I went with an old client who ended up being my friend to Doc Chey's. We had veggie spring rolls and I had pad thai. It was delish . But this dude from her work and a big fat client sat showed up there and sat at the next table. There wasn't much room for the fat guy and he kept getting up and putting his butt right in my face.

i was just at the covered market in pest, where i bought some absinthe among other novelty gifts. but i ate lunch there, too, and had this hungarian dish of sausage, potatoes, peppers, and some other shit that tasted real good. i got a beer and baklava as well. the baklava was just ok. it cost 1150 forint, but all i had were two 1000 ft. bills, and the lady didn't have enough change so she spared me the 150 forint, which is just under one u.s. dollar. i don't think she liked doing that, but it's her fault for not having sufficient change in a busy-ass marketplace. TA-DOW, HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW?!

I went to lunch with my old office ladies and got a supreme amount of gossip. we ate at the twisted fork. I got the steak salad. Overpriced.
today dragan and i went to eat lunch at this family's house out in the stix of croatia. they're pretty poor, like a lot of people, but they still spared no expense and pulled out all the big guns: orange fanta, bbq pork, homemade sausage, fresh killed chicken, fresh bread, and leetle tiny peekles and hot peppers. i had turkish coffee afterwards with a little sugar. by interpreting through dragan, they said next time i came over, they'd make rabbit.
Wednesday, February 23, 2005
MP called to see if I wanted to get lunch. We went to my house since I happen to have a lot of food. He explained all about the Palastines to me while we had half a chicken salad sandwich, half a turkey/jalepeno montery jack/ spinach sandwich, tabuoleh, the rest of the bleu cheese cole slaw, fritos, and cookies. I made powder lipton tea since I love it, and he only scoffed a little.

virginia and I ate at the Raleigh Neomonde, but were constantly confused about whether things were the same or different from the Cary location. I had the sampler platter with potato salad, stuffed grape leaves, cabbage salad, and chickpea salad. Thanks to the beautiful weather (65 and sunny with blue skies), we got to eat outside. Everyone there was drinking diet sodas.
I passed a Pupuseria on my way back at the corner of western, hillsborough, and jones franklin. I love Pupusas and am looking forward to going there for lunch ASAP.

while i was in san angelo, texas, i saw this place called whataburger. i thought to myself that it'd be hilarious if i had a burger from there one day and after the first bite or two look up and exclaim, "what a burger!". so i convinced my colleague to have lunch there on saturday. the employees didn't seem very happy to be working at whataburger, but my order went through and i finally sank my teeth into the loaded burger after much anticipation. i raised my eyes slowly to chris and said "what a burger!". it was somewhat anticlimactic. i got the double-decker badboy, and it was very salty and greasy, but still edible. i will not go back to whataburger.

For a lunch meeting I ordered the tailgate special # 1 from the Q Shack through Raleigh Take Out. The meat (ribs, brisket and bbq) and hush puppies got high marks, but the sides (slaw, tater salad, and baked beans) left something to be desired. I'd do everything exactly the same again though. there wasn't a whole lot of complaints from the staff. It was 15 minutes late. Next time I'd order a large side of Mac & Cheese for Megan, because I think all the potato salad had meat in it.

got me a little tokyo joe's action cuz i'm trying to eat healthy these days. no mt. dew, either. straight up high-quality h2o. the regular chicken bowl with brown rice, veggies, and spicy-aki sause seems like a relatively healthy thing to eat, and it's not expensive to boot. so go grab yourselves some tokyo joe's; you'll be glad you did. i know i am. glad, that is. i was trying to sound like i was a famous person giving a testamonial on the a.m. radio.

since my office moved i was hoping i would have all kinds of cool new places to eat luch, so far that hasn't really happened as I am a despicable creature of habit. However today i went to a new place with my Dad. It's called the Ghengis Grill. It's was a pretty good mongolian bbq. A little on the pricey side for one bowl and it made my tummy rumble a bit afterward but overall it was really good.

i just went to einstein bagel bros for the last freaking time. those a-holes gave me chips instead of the potato salad like i asked for (i did the drive thru so i didn't realise in time), and last time i was there i waited in line forever only to have them mess up my order completely, and then when i told them i didn't order what they gave me, the chick gave me guff and was quite rude. they're always rude at einstein bagel bros and the sandwiches are sub-par in my opinion.

Today I ate at a place called "the market" in Larimer square. It's kinda like a grocery store/restaurant, it's very european in that way (see picture below). I had the jubalaya pie and although it was good my stomach has been rumbling ever since. nothing has happened yet but i'm afraid that when it does, it's gonna be bad.
Tuesday, December 21, 2004
i went with casey my lead guitarist to the elephant bar. it was a good lunch because i was pretty much done with work so i had a couple pints of pale ale and casey had a couple pints of bass. beers at lunch mid-week is always a good thing in my humble opinion. elephant bar has a kind of south-pacific menu. lotta fish and salads and seafood but they also have other stuff. i had the fried shrimp po' boy and they pretty much doused the thing with tartar, which was not the bomb. i wanted a shrimp po' boy, not a tartar sandwich. the fries were mediocre and too soggy.
Monday, December 20, 2004
i ate at fatburger for the first time today, even though it's a las vegas classic. i think they call it "fatburger" cuz one of the first things they ask you is: would you like chili, bacon, cheese, or egg on your fatburger today? my reply to that query was a resounding "no" but don't think i didn't play with the idea of eating such a scrumptious burger just to experience a party in my mouth with everyone invited. the burger was good and the onion rings melted in my mouth. all in all a good lunch.
Today was our company xmas lunch. I signed up to bring the mac and cheese. I didn’t b/c yesterday was too shitty and I didn’t get to the store. ( my hangover was also a factor). So today when my boss came and picked me up I made him go to the ham place ( cos I had to get the ham anyway) and I got potatoes au gratin and stuffing. Everything else was in the casserole variety or pie. I managed to control myself and only have 3 deviled eggs.
Wednesday, December 15, 2004
we went to red robin today and i got the 5 alarm burger which includes pepperjack chz, jalepenos, salsa, and chipotle mayo. it's good and one thing i really like about the dirty bird industries is the bottomless steak fries, although i never get through my original basket. it's just the idea that's appealing to me.

today i went to Jimm John's and got a Big John Sub. The sandwhich was good (not scrumpy) but the bread was great. my office will be moving next week. this should open up a whole new world in lunch options for me.
today being a half-day at work, i went to lunch at il vicino's with the roomie and another friend. they both got the pesto panini chicken sandwich, which is what i normally get and includes chopped grilled chicken, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, onion, and a delectible pesto spread. this time though i had the capicola ham and turkey sandwich with a side caesar. il vicino's caesar salads are quite the bomb because the caesar dressing is made the real way with anchovies and they even throw on a little anchovie on top. i don't eat the anchovies though.
Thursday, December 09, 2004
I went to lunch with a client/friend today. They have that bread that you stick in the herbed olive oil. I only sort of like it but I always eat it as tho it's my last meal. Anyway I got linguine, chicken, mushrooms and artichokes in a lemon taragon cream sauce. It was major delish, but I ate too much and now I feel like a grease ball. God knows I need a cream sauce like a hole in my head.

today i went to q'doba with a couple coworkers. q'doba's pretty much like chipotle, but i still say it tastes better. i used to get the vegetarian burrito, not because i'm a vegetarian (which i'm not) but because it's quite delish (not meaning to sound too much like chevy valentine et al). i don't get the vegetarian burrito anymore though, since i discovered the magical magnificently modest chicken quesadillas. these are quite possible the most bomb-ass quesadillas i've had anywhere. i think quesadilla-making is underrated. i also splurged and got a damn chocolate chip cookie. it's getting harder and harder for me to resist getting sweets.
